Postulant Turns to Politics –
Leah C. Cabullo, 48, was Postulant of the St. Mary the Virgin Order under The Epescopal Church for the past 6 years. Came December 1, 2009 upon proper consultation with her superior, she is now running as an independent Candidate for Mayor of her home Town, Mondragon N. Samar.
In open forum, an audience with both Civil and Civic Society members, with family and friends she is being bombard with questions as:
Q. Why have you opted to join politics inspite of the general Policy of the Holy See that one in the Religious Order, a nun in particular should not act directly as a politician.
Answer. The short story is this. I received the postulancy last November 2004 after a period of formation. To me at that time that was the best recourse where in I will be able to serve God and people in the simple, quite, devoted way, very much apart from that difficult, troubleful , filled with complexity of life I have before as I struggle for existence to serve people – then I was trying to search for the best way to serve people completely. So my postulancy happened as I received the Calling.
My Ministry again was focused at the same direction – to look after the less privileged, a Godly mission. The mission seemed to be difficult because the task has to be realized only if people work together, if there is authority with the right command and value laden fellowship-in a community re-building a community and people requires me to go out to the community and people. Thus the decision to join again politics, but now with a different strategy which is Godly oriented. I want to help the people in my place, most especially rebuild themselves socially, economically, intellectually through a process which is morally and spiritually directed.
Q. Which are the Major reforms of the Province which greatly Affects the Municipality that has to given Priority, must be faced now?
Answer.1st is poverty, the inability of the majority of people to make the basic need in a sustainable manner. A proof to this is the fact that for so long a time, until now the Northern Samar remains a prominent lister in the forest cluster of provinces. Naturally Mondragon is affected inspite of each bountiful resource. This is the question of priority/ focus in the part of those who handle the real of governance.
However, from my point of view this resolution of the oppressive regime does not really solve problems because those are mis-directed, brought about by conflict of interest.
There must be a leader who has that genuine interest and capacities to solve the specific problem for the benefit of majority who believe in change. That leader or governance must work with the poor in order to put the human resources in balance.
Q. How do you see the construction and development program?
Answer. Well said, will printed, will planned in principles but lass of accomplishment. A proof ? – the problem of poverty still remain… poverty, unemployment, high cost of living, poor delivery of services, etc.
Although I understand that process of reconstruction and development follows a long difficult process the most right solution of this is the re-organization of governance by involving people who are accepting the challenge of change and ready to orchestrate the system.
Q. Being a Postulant (ex. Postulant) what is your view of the so-called Theology of Reconstruction. Don’t you think that in this Country there is still a need for a sound of Theology of Liberation-?
Answer. Why? – Was there or is there a destruction that happened to theology which we are adhering to? Personally my point alone this line of thought is that there is nothing to reconstruct because theology is concrete and permanent (to me) rather because of miss interpretation by those who half-believingly profess that they are learned there is a need to strengthened the teaching…put theology in each permanent high place but made easy for more people to understand, love it and integrate it deeply in their system of life-
A need for a sound theology of liberation in this country? – The follow-up questions, what makes the theology of liberation in this country not sound enough? Your answer is good as mine in this regard.
Lets look at the real scenario, there are still so many forces which are imposing political, fiscal, psychological constraints on the poor people of this country in the province and eventually Mondragon, this is not meant to imply or insinuate the theology of reconstruction is wrong or needed – what is needed is reflection of all of those involved—so that real Christian value will emerge and strengthen our Christian society.
